Even though Thomas Hooker's brews are only available in three states in the Northeast, the name is known nationwide. Maybe it's because this brewery has been producing some of the best beers to come out of New England in recent memory. Presented in cobalt blue bottles (which are effective at blocking light and preventing skunkiness), Old Marley looks impressive, and it has the freshest aroma of any beer we've smelled. The head is weak because of the low carbonation, but there is plenty of aroma without it. The rich alcohol notes are enjoyable (not overbearing), and the oak and smoke flavors are more complex than those you will find in fine wine. The slightly syrupy body has hints of vanilla and a pleasant resinous flavor from the hops that finishes strong. This beer just gets better with every drink. |
