Liquid sunshine: Florida’s booming beer scene
March/April 2014

Until recently, it seemed craft beer in Florida might be on a long-term spring break, but now, its beer scene’s suddenly one of the country’s most electric. If you’ve scored one of Cigar City’s saisons or stopped by world-class beer bar Redlight Redlight, you know what we’re talking about. But now, the state’s launching a slew of new breweries, and creating its own styles: Just as SoCal birthed the new IPA, Florida’s got it’s own take on the Berliner weisse that’s garnering incredible buzz, suggesting that the other state famous for sea and sun is having its big beer moment. Homebrewers are catching the spotlight, too: Fests like spring’s SPRUNG! and fall’s Grovetoberfest (both in Miami) put up “pseudo-breweries” with strong social media followings in their own tents, just like the big boys. There’s even an entire website dedicated to the craft beers of Disney World. Below, we’ve linked to the highlights of Florida’s booming beer industry.

THE FLORIDA WEISSE: A primer on the Sunshine State’s very own beer style.

FLORIDA’S FUNKIEST: Funky Buddha’s bigger and better than ever. Plus: more here!
