DRAFT REVIEW: XVI Anniversary Barley Wine
RATING
93

This deep sienna brew’s thick, tan head lasts just as long as it takes for the bold aroma to journey from glass to nose. Breathe in rich caramel accentuated by lightly burnt sugar notes, which sweeten the grassy, orange-scented hops that appear just as a dose of spicy alcohol heat pricks the nostrils. Like the aroma, dark caramel stretches across the tongue, unlocking fresh plum and apricot; in the middle, a grassy, bitter hop swell rises, then leaves lingering bitterness alongside sticky malts as it recedes. Delicious today, this beer will be absolutely stunning after a few years in the cellar.
