This Northern California brewery has a well-deserved reputation for quality. Extra Pale Ale is light honey in color, topped off with a blanket of bubbles that dissipates quickly. A dried-grass aroma offers slightly husky malted barley notes, as well as a notable level of alcohol -- a bit off-putting for the style. The flavor starts with sugary malt sweetness, then moves on to citrusy hop flavors and moderate bitterness before finishing sweet with big grapefruit notes that last well into the aftertaste. Additionally, there’s a resinous quality to the hops toward the end, seeming to grab hold of the palate longer than expected. Overall, the sweetness is a bit too high and detracts from the beer’s refreshing quality.
