To most Americans, any mention of bocks brings up only one image: a ram on a smooth yellow label with the words "Shiner Bock" above it -- proving why Spoetzl Brewery's version is one of the most recognizable bocks in the world (and has been since 1909). The rich, brown beer opens with a mild malt aroma that has bread and toasted notes, and while the low hops could be brought up a bit to compete with the malt, they are still present. A reasonable malt backbone complements a slight biscuity taste and a full flavor that isn't overly sweet. The head is somewhat weak, but the body is easygoing and refreshing. We're hoping Spoetzl keeps making this quality beer for another 98 years.
