This beer fills the nose with a rich malt aroma: Thick toffee and chocolate sweeten toasted malts, creating a big aroma even for the oft-robust scented dunkel. Similarly, this beer’s sweet notes command on the tongue. Caramel and chocolate take the lead, sinking deep into the taste buds. The style’s classic bread crust flavors are there, but have trouble poking out from the malts’ sweeter side; a pinch of black pepper adds momentary contrast mid-sip. Bitterness builds as this beer washes back, but not enough to wash long-lasting sweetness from the tongue. |
