For years, Sudwerk's brewers have made classic representations of German lagers, not surprising given their proximity to and relationship with UC Davis' brewing program. This beer pours deep gold in color, with fantastic clarity and a tan, creamy head. The beer's aroma is decidedly malty, with Vienna malt sweetness and mild peppery spice lending to its wonderful overall profile. Up front, the beer shows off a bit of caramelized malty sweetness, with the signature biscuity profile you'd expect in the style. Hops come through subtly, with a floral and spice mix that tastes great without being overly bitter. Finishing dry, the Marzen lets its caramel and bready characters linger into the aftertaste. This beer is medium bodied, with mild alcohol warmth and soft carbonation, making this a well-rounded beer and a pleasurable drinking experience.
