RATING
90
The "original" pilsner, first brewed in the 1800s, Pilsner Urquell is the benchmark for pilsner brewers around the world. Light golden colored with brilliant clarity and a white, billowy head, the beer is beautiful in its simplicity. With aromas of bread and grain accented by a mild peppery hop character, it is balanced with a slight bent toward hops. This is a beer best tasted in gulps, not sips, in order to allow the flavors to fully impact your palate. The first taste is wonderfully bready, which actually accentuates as it warms a bit. That flavor is quickly balanced by spicy noble hops, contributing a mild bitter impact on the sides of your mouth. With a dry finish, Pilsner Urquell has a hop bit and green, hoppy aftertaste. A barely medium body, super-soft water, and gentle carbonation render this beer highly quaffable.
