Beginning with a bit of a musty aroma and begetal undertones, the beer's chocolate notes are hard to find, but are certainly there. The flavors are generally thin, lacking complexity and ranging from zesty to caramely. Lemony notes remind us of acidulated malt, and are rather out of place for this style of beer. There are hints of brown sugar, spice, and a bit of sour apple, too, which are surprises, but not necessarily bad ones. Monkeyshine finsihes slightly sweet and watery, with a lingering astringency and tartness felt on the cheeks. The beer is refreshing, but seemingly out of style for English strong ales.
