Since 1856 the monks at the Westmalle monastery have brewed a light, easy-drinking brown ale for their lunchtime meals. In 1926, the abbey's brewers decided they wanted something stronger, and Wastmalle Dubbel was born. Since its inception, the beer's strong, hearty malt flavors have provided plenty of sustenance for the abbey staff and fans of the brew around the world. Westmalle's aroma is second to none with vinous yeast notes and some milder hints of green apple and black pepper. Banana flavors also come through and provide interesting complexity in both the flavor and aroma. The malt flavors, however, are very forceful in the flavor and mute the slight hoppiness. With a rich body that stands up even if this beer is overly chilled, this dubbel is a great choice. |
