Strong Scotch Ale

Also called “wee heavy” ales, these complexly malty and richly sweet brews are the strongest of the Scotch ales—ABVs can reach 10 percent. Both the aroma and flavor brim with deep malt and a hint of peat and, occasionally, some dark fruit esters; hops are scarce, if present at all. These beers are full-bodied, often presenting a chewy mouthfeel with noticeable (but smooth) alcohol warmth.
Pair: A rich beer calls for a rich food; opt for game meats, gnocchi dishes and aged cheeses. Their flavors won’t topple against these beers’ forceful flavors and thick mouthfeels.
