Four-alarm fermenting

Amy and Aron Levin

We already know firefighters—when they aren’t boldly running into infernos—are pretty mean cooks. Turns out some of them have brewing chops, too.

St. Florian’s Brewery is the brainchild of Amy Levin and her husband/brewer Aron, a captain of the Windsor Fire District. Launched this year after Aron suffered minor burns on the job, the brewery’s named for the patron saint of firefighters and dedicates at least 5 percent of its profits to fire-related organizations. Try: The 7.3% ABV flagship, St. Florian IPA

Launched in San Francisco in 1999 by a volunteer firefighter, Hook & Ladder Brewing eventually moved east to Maryland, where it donates 25 cents of each case sold to Baltimore’s Metropolitan Firefighters Burn Center Fund. Try: The 95-point nutty, chocolaty Backdraft Brown

Conceived by two Los Angeles firemen while battling local brushfires, Firemans Brew debuted in 2007 with beer, sodas and coffee. Each year, the company donates some of its profits to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Try: The bready, 91-point Fireman’s Blonde
