Old Curmudgeon Ale

RATING
89

The big bursting bubbles above this deep golden brew exude intense black pepper spice, cinnamon and cedarlike hops. Let the beer breathe and sweet molasses emerges, tying the scents into one complex bouquet. Rich toffee and molasses swirl around the tongue as a dusting of cinnamon stimulates the taste buds. Intense, prickly alcohol heat breaks through the flavors and combines with hop bitterness to pinch the throat and gums. Old Curmudgeon finishes with sugary molasses and cedar on the tongue, and while it’s enjoyable today, the aggressive alcohol heat suggests it would be outstanding after a year or two in the cellar.
