7 Spanish beers you have to try

Craft beer is raining in Spain: Particularly in Barcelona and around Catalonia, brewers are stretching beyond lagers, brewing ales with terroir via Grenache juice, local herbs and home-grown hops. Unfortunately, many of those beers aren’t stretching to the U.S. just yet, so when you spy Spanish brew, pick it up pronto. Here, our favorite imports for an at-home taste of Spain. (Need pairing suggestions? We’ve got those, too.)

Sagra Bohio
The brewmaster (a California expat) teamed with star chef Pepe Rodriguez to create this roasted, ashy, 10.5%-ABV sipper with a strong molasses note that steers the beer toward dessert.
La Socarrada Cervesa Artesanal Premium
One of the loveliest herb beers we've ever sipped, this 95-point amber uses pine, lavender and bready notes to prop up wonderfully fresh rosemary. Light honey breezes through the entire sip.
L’anjub Juliett
Woody, bitter and wonderfully roasted, this 92-IBU stout dances outside its style, but somehow remains masterfully smooth.
Elaborada Er Boqueron
A splash of seawater gives this soft, sweet, slurpable lager a salty snarl.
Gisberga Trigo
This 4.8%-ABV farmhouse-style refresher will blow you away with its dewy, earthy wheat, lemon spritzes and wispy, cinnamony yeast spice.
Stillwater / L’anjub Aloja
For his latest collaboration, America’s gypsy-brewer darling Brian Strumke headed to Catalonia to co-create this prickly, 6.9%-ABV saison.
Virtue Sidra de Nava
It's not an import, but it's a salute across the ocean. Master American cidermaker Greg Hall’s ode to Spain’s Basque ciders is this head-spinningly tart spring release: Pungent white vinegar leads the charge; power through, and you’re rewarded with pastoral hay, strawberry, lemon and green apple.
