July/August 2014

Learn while you drink! Geek out over these flavor-forward special-release beer series, rolling out right now:

CELLARABLE

The brewery: Fort Collins The series: Malt Monster The gist: Four brawny releases, including a strong Scotch ale and Belgian dubbel (out now), are designed to evolve with a little time in your cellar. If you only try one: Snatch up two bottles of the upcoming barleywine—drink one this fall, and compare notes when you crack open the other next year.

HOPPED-UP

The brewery: Sierra Nevada The series: Harvest The gist: Five IPA releases (Single Hop, Fresh Hop, Newly Developed Hop, Wet Hop and Wild Hop IPAs) span the many roads to bitter beer. If you only try one: Look for the Harvest Wild Hop IPA this winter, which includes the mysterious “Neo-Mexicanus” hop variety.

MALT-FORWARD

The brewery: Cismontane The series: Single Malt Beers The gist: Five beers made in conjunction with German maltsters Best Malz swap in a single new specialty malt with each release, spotlighting the unique contributions of malts like Vienna, Munich and Red X. If you only try one: Savor the rich, toasted bread crust and caramel sweetness of the Dark Munich release.

YEAST-DRIVEN

The brewery: Crooked Stave The series: Ferus Flow The gist: An ongoing collection of beers that swap traditional yeast strains for funky Brettanomyces, all made collaboratively with other notable craft brewers. If you only try one: Hunt for the inaugural collab, a Riesling-sweet, lambic-tart Belgian pale ale brewed with Upslope.

STYLE-WILD

The brewery: Widmer Brothers The series: 30 Beers for 30 Years The gist: Thirty beers (some previously released, some brand-new) that each represent a year in the brewery’s history; each wears a label illustrated by a different Portland, Ore., artist. If you only try one: Get your hands on Der Uber Tuber, a Russett potato beer originally brewed for the 2003 Oregon Brewers Festival.
