Snowed Under

Much like planning escape routes for imagined zombie attacks, this time of year always makes me wonder what I’d do if I was stuck in a certain building during a flash blizzard. The 7-Eleven down the street from our office would get old as soon as I finished flipping through the newest Slammer Newspaper, and the mall would be fun for about five minutes (unless there’s a coinciding zombie attack). I’d probably end up in my apartment without food, beer or power. I’m not as lucky as these folks, who spent eight days holed up in the Lion Inn in North Yorkshire, England. According to the BBC, five staff members and one couple weathered the storm, and did so without the the Lion Inn’s boss. So, no boss, and you’re stuck in a bar. That would be devastating if provisions were low.

The beer did not run out and there was plenty of food at the inn, which stands 1,325ft (404m) above sea level, reports the BBC.

OK, the premise sounds fun, but surely a sense of isolation would sink in after a few days.

“We have wireless Internet here and the television works so we have been fine,” said the bar’s chef.

So you’ve got beer, food, television and Internet. Still, the claustrophobia would be crippling.

During the day, the couple and staff managed to get out onto the snow on improvised sledges made from beer trays.

What? Fine, but surely, after a few days of sledding, drinking, eating, watching TV and emailing your friends, surely, you’d trade it all in for a warm, comfortable bed. Right?

The Lion Inn is also a bed and breakfast and during their eight days inside the pub the couple and staff were able to stay in its bedrooms.

OK, that seals it. The Lion Inn is officially the world’s best impromptu location to be snowed in.

“We have had people phoning up asking to get trapped in, but it’s kind of boring now and I would like to go home,” said the chef.

Every party has one killjoy.

Where would you like to get stuck? My vote goes to Horse Brass Pub in Portland, Oregon. I would clean that place out of its fish and chips in a matter of hours.
